Search the Design+Encyclopedia
Here are some tips for typing effective keywords and phrases when using the search feature on the Design+Encyclopedia to ensure you find what you are looking for:

With these tips, you should be able to find the information you are looking for more easily and efficiently in the Design+Encyclopedia:

  1. Use specific keywords related to the information you're looking for to narrow down your search results. For example, if you're looking for information on "minimalist graphic design," use those specific keywords in your search query. Search is case insensetive.

  2. There is no need to use quotes for exact phrase match, indeed, you should not use quotes around a phrase to search for an exact match of the phrase. Tor example "Frank Lloyd Wright" will not result anything, but if you just type Frank Lloyd Wright then you will get a result; use longer correct names when possible, or just write the first names; such as Frank and hit search or enter when the quick search does not bring all results.

  3. Do not use boolean operators such as AND, OR, NOT to refine your search. For example, searching for "minimalist AND graphic design" will not return results that include both terms; instead glue the concepts using natural language; "minimalist graphic design" will work, without the quotes.

  4. Do not use wildcards instead type partially, for example searching for "des" will return results that start with "des" such as words like design, designer, designer's etc.

  5. Try alternative keywords especially if your search doesn't return the results you were looking for, try alternative keywords or synonyms, different spellings or even misspellings.

  6. Search the designer, artist, architect name: If you are looking for information on a specific designer, artist, or architect, use their name as a keyword in your search.

  7. Keep it simple and keep your search query simple and clear, avoid using too many words or complex phrases, better to use less words whenever possible as we always try to make exact match.

  8. Be open-minded when searching, sometimes the information you're looking for may be found under a different category or using different keywords than you expected.

Pro-Tip: The search box is at the beginning of each page, just in case you did not notice it!

Art In Congo

The art of Congo is an expansive and complex phenomenon that has been deeply intertwined with the region’s history and culture. In the early modern period, Congo was home to a variety of indigenous art forms and practices that were rooted in the region’s spiritual beliefs and practices. In the 19th century, the introduction of European colonialism resulted in a dramatic shift in the artistic landscape of Congo. During this period, European-style oil painting and sculpture became increasingly popular, while the traditional art forms of Congo were largely pushed to the sidelines. In the 20th century, the emergence of Congolese art movements such as the École de Kinshasa and the École de Brazzaville brought a renewed focus on indigenous art forms and aesthetics. These art movements sought to reclaim and celebrate the traditional art forms of Congo, while also introducing new stylistic elements to the art of Congo. Characterized by vibrant colors, dynamic compositions, and intricate patterns, the art of Congo has been shaped by centuries of cultural, political, and economic influences.

Anti-dazzle Shades

Anti-dazzle shades, also known as sun visors, are a type of automotive accessory designed to reduce the amount of glare and sunlight that enters the driver's field of vision while driving. These shades are typically mounted on the interior of the windshield and can be adjusted to block out the sun's rays from different angles. The primary purpose of anti-dazzle shades is to improve driving safety by reducing the amount of glare that can cause visual discomfort and impair the driver's ability to see the road ahead. Glare from the sun can also cause temporary blindness, making it difficult to see other vehicles, pedestrians, or obstacles on the road. Anti-dazzle shades can help prevent these hazards, allowing the driver to maintain better control of the vehicle and avoid accidents. Anti-dazzle shades come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. Some are made of tinted plastic or mesh, while others are made of fabric or vinyl. Some shades are designed to be attached to the windshield with suction cups, while others are permanently mounted to the vehicle's interior. Some shades are even motorized, allowing them to be adjusted automatically based on the position of the sun. While anti-dazzle shades can be effective in reducing glare and improving driving safety, they can also have some drawbacks. For example, they can obstruct the driver's view of traffic signals, road signs, and other important information. They can also create blind spots that make it difficult to see other vehicles or pedestrians. Additionally, some shades can be difficult to install or adjust, and may require professional installation. Overall, anti-dazzle shades are a useful accessory for anyone who spends a lot of time driving in bright sunlight. They can help reduce the risk of accidents and improve driving safety, but they should be used with caution and only when necessary.

Art Moderne Style

Art Moderne Style, also known as Streamline Moderne, is an architectural style that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, primarily in the United States. It is characterized by a sleek, streamlined appearance that emphasizes the use of modern materials such as glass, steel, and stucco. The style was heavily influenced by the machine aesthetic and the rise of the industrial age, which is reflected in its emphasis on geometric shapes and linear designs. One of the key features of Art Moderne Style is its minimal ornamentation. Unlike other architectural styles of the time, Art Moderne buildings were designed with a focus on functionality rather than decoration. This is reflected in the use of flat roofs, rounded corners, and large windows, which were intended to maximize natural light and create a sense of openness and spaciousness. Another important aspect of Art Moderne Style is its use of terraces and balconies. These features were designed to provide outdoor living space and to connect the interior of the building with its surroundings. They also helped to create a sense of continuity between the building and the landscape, which was an important consideration for architects at the time. Art Moderne Style was used primarily in public and commercial buildings, such as movie theaters, train stations, and department stores. However, it was also used in residential architecture, particularly in urban areas. The style's emphasis on functionality and its use of modern materials made it well-suited for the needs of modern urban dwellers, who were looking for efficient and practical living spaces. Overall, Art Moderne Style is an important architectural style that reflects the changing needs and values of society during the early 20th century. Its emphasis on functionality, minimal ornamentation, and modern materials helped to shape the look and feel of modern architecture, and its influence can still be seen in many buildings today.
