Avigdor Arikha was a Romanian-born Israeli painter and printmaker. His robustly classical works blend the traditional methods of European painting with the spirit of modern abstraction. He first gained recognition for his colourful abstract paintings in the 1950s, but later shifted to figurative works, initially focusing on landscapes and still life and from the 1970s on portraiture. He is also renowned for his prints and drawings in graphite, charcoal, and ink. Having settled in Paris in the early 1950s, he moved to Israel in 1962. A man of diverse interests, Arikha was also a respected art critic, lecturer and philosopher, and was awarded numerous prizes and honours throughout his career. Some of his most famous works are the 1952 oil painting 'The Orange Field', 1962’s 'Abstract Landscape with Red', 'Still Life with a Fruit Bowl' (1982) and his self-portrait 'Avigdor in his Studio' (1998).
