Arthur Stannard Vernay (1877-1960) was an American explorer, naturalist, and collector who made significant contributions to the fields of zoology and anthropology. He is best known for his expeditions to Asia and Africa, where he collected specimens of rare and exotic animals, as well as cultural artifacts that are now housed in museums around the world. Vernay's interest in natural history began at a young age, and he went on to study biology and zoology at Columbia University. In 1909, he embarked on his first expedition to Asia, where he collected specimens of birds, mammals, and reptiles. Vernay's expeditions were not only significant for the specimens he collected, but also for the valuable insights he provided into the cultures and customs of the people he encountered. He documented his travels through photographs, films, and written accounts, which have provided a wealth of information for researchers in the fields of anthropology and ethnography. In addition to his scientific contributions, Vernay was also a philanthropist and supporter of the arts. He donated generously to museums and cultural institutions, and was a patron of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
