Allan Kaprow

Allan Kaprow was an American artist, art theorist and a pioneer in the development of performance art. He is best known for his Happenings, a precursor to performance art, and his assemblages, or environments made of everyday objects, which have been influential in the development of installation art. He was born in 1927 in Atlantic City and studied music composition, art history and philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, where he later taught. Kaprow's most iconic works include 18 Happenings in 6 Parts (1959-60), Yard (1960), Water Yam (1964), Push and Pull: A Furniture Comedy for Hans Hofmann (1963) and the installation Work in Progress (1966).
