Yappy Bookstore Multi-booksote Space

Yappy Bookstore Multi-booksote Space is an innovative interior design project that masterfully transforms a traditional round building in southern Chinese architectural style into a contemporary literary sanctuary. This 450-square-meter space, designed by Yu-Chien Chiang, represents a sophisticated fusion of historical architecture and modern spatial concepts, drawing inspiration from the whimsical narrative of Alice in Wonderland. The design's distinctive feature is its dramatic red book wall, which serves as both a functional element and an artistic statement, creating a portal-like experience that guides visitors into a carefully curated literary environment. The space successfully addresses the challenges of a long, narrow layout through innovative architectural solutions, including strategically placed viewing angles and an interactive performance area with a high stage that deliberately blurs the boundary between performers and audience. Notable design elements include the thoughtful treatment of original architectural features, such as the preservation and enhancement of arc-shaped windows through an interleaved arrangement that creates compelling light patterns, and the intentional incorporation of small wall apertures that metaphorically represent the concept of stealing light. The project, which won the Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional expertise in acoustic engineering, utilizing three-dimensional floor layouts and spring structures with soft materials to optimize sound absorption for various cultural activities including film screenings, lectures, and musical performances. The design's philosophical approach emphasizes organic preservation while implementing transparent compression techniques, allowing the space to maintain its historical essence while accommodating contemporary functional requirements.
