The Unity of Zen and Martial Arts Tea Shop is an innovative interior design project that masterfully integrates traditional Chinese martial arts culture with contemporary tea-drinking experiences, located in Foshan, China. This Gold A' Design Award-winning spatial design seamlessly merges the philosophical principles of Zen Buddhism with the dynamic elements of Wing Chun martial arts, creating a unique cultural nexus within a modern tea establishment. The design's centerpiece draws inspiration from the traditional wooden dummy used in Wing Chun training, incorporating horizontal and vertical structures with traditional mortise-tenon joinery to establish a sophisticated spatial coordinate system. This architectural framework effectively segments the slate gray basement space, creating multiple layers of visual interest and functional zones. The design features transparent acrylic display boxes mounted above wooden stakes, showcasing cultural artifacts such as dancing lions and traditional pot walls that represent Lingnan cultural heritage. A particularly notable element is the artistic interpretation of Tea Mountain, represented through undulating forms that evoke cloud-like layers, integrated into a central elongated tea table. The project, completed in 2019, successfully addresses the contemporary challenge of preserving and promoting traditional Chinese culture within a modern commercial context, while meeting the sophisticated demands of young urban consumers. The space demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in its material selection, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design elements to create an atmosphere that honors historical legacy while embracing contemporary aesthetics. The innovative approach to cultural preservation and spatial design earned this project recognition through the prestigious A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its significant contribution to modern interior design that respects and elevates cultural heritage.
