Atelier 17

Atelier 17 was a printmaking studio founded in Paris in 1927 by the British painter and printmaker Stanley William Hayter. The studio was originally established as a space for artists to experiment with printmaking techniques and to collaborate with one another. Over time, Atelier 17 became a hub for avant-garde artists from around the world, including Joan Miró, Max Ernst, and Pablo Picasso. The studio's emphasis on experimentation and collaboration led to the development of new printmaking techniques and the creation of some of the most innovative and influential prints of the 20th century. Atelier 17 moved to New York in 1940, where it continued to attract leading artists of the day, including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko. The studio's influence on the development of Abstract Expressionism, a movement that dominated American art in the 1940s and 1950s, cannot be overstated. Atelier 17's emphasis on the creative process, rather than the finished product, inspired a generation of artists to explore new techniques and to push the boundaries of what was possible in printmaking. Today, Atelier 17 is remembered not only for its groundbreaking prints, but also for its role in fostering a sense of community among artists. The studio's collaborative spirit and emphasis on experimentation continue to inspire artists to this day, and its legacy can be seen in the work of contemporary printmakers around the world.
