Zhongshuge Bookshop

Zhongshuge Bookshop is an innovative architectural and interior design masterpiece located in Dujiangyan, Southwest China, that revolutionizes the traditional concept of bookstore design by seamlessly integrating local cultural elements with contemporary spatial aesthetics. This Gold A' Design Award-winning project, designed by Xiang Li, spans 973 square meters and demonstrates an exceptional fusion of cultural heritage and modern architectural innovation. The design draws profound inspiration from Dujiangyan's historic water conservancy project and local landscape, incorporating these elements through sophisticated architectural techniques and thoughtful spatial planning. The bookstore's most striking feature is its literature area, where bookshelves are designed to evoke the magnificent Dujiangyan dam, creating a dramatic vertical display enhanced by mirror ceiling reflections that amplify the sense of space and grandeur. The innovative design includes boat-shaped reading tables that appear to float on black tile flooring, creating an illusion of vessels moored on a serene lake. The space accommodates an impressive collection of over 80,000 books across 20,000 varieties, while maintaining a careful balance between aesthetic appeal and functional practicality. The visitor journey is carefully choreographed, beginning with gray tile-inspired bookshelves that define the forum area, leading to an expansive reading space where shelving seamlessly integrates with structural columns. The second floor offers various seating arrangements, complemented by accessible bookshelves along the stairway, creating a comprehensive and immersive literary environment that honors both local heritage and contemporary design principles.
