Air Box Residential House

Air Box Residential House is an innovative residential interior design project completed in 2019 in Hangzhou, China, that masterfully demonstrates the principles of modern spatial design through its distinctive architectural intervention. The 275-square-meter residence is characterized by its defining feature: a suspended box structure that ingeniously divides the living space into two distinct sections, creating an intriguing indoor outside space that challenges traditional interior architecture conventions. The design employs a sophisticated minimalist aesthetic, utilizing a refined palette of black, white, and gray tones to achieve spatial purity and visual clarity. The thoughtful integration of materials, including marble flooring that extends from the cloister throughout the space, creates a cohesive visual narrative while maintaining temperature regulation. The living area features warm carpeting and comfortable upholstered furniture, while wood flooring provides a natural warmth that effectively balances the cool sophistication of the marble elements. The design, created by Mu Yuan, incorporates structuralist principles in its lighting arrangement, which enhances the ceremonial quality of returning home. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space and Exhibition Design, demonstrates exceptional attention to spatial composition, with carefully restrained lighting design and simplified ceiling treatments that maintain visual clarity. The residence's proximity to the West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage site, influenced its conceptual development, creating a sanctuary that balances urban sophistication with contemplative seclusion.
