A Stranger To Words Data Visualization

A Stranger to Words Data Visualization is an innovative interactive network graph that transforms personal learning experiences of dyslexia into a comprehensive visual representation. Created by designer Meng Chih Chiang, this groundbreaking data visualization project encompasses a substantial database of 23,358 words, structured through 4,525 nodes and 17,648 edges, offering an intricate exploration of language learning patterns. The visualization employs sophisticated algorithmic mapping to illustrate the complex relationships between words based on four key properties: known/unknown status, letter length, syllable length, and frequency of occurrence. This interactive interface allows users to zoom in and explore individual nodes, revealing detailed connections and properties of each word, while the size of nodes correlates directly with their connectivity within the network. Developed between 2014 and 2015, the project utilizes advanced technical implementations including Excel programming for initial data processing, Gephi visualization platform for layout preprocessing, and JavaScript library sigma.js for final rendering. The work stands as a significant contribution to both data visualization and educational research fields, offering unique insights into language learning challenges faced by individuals with dyslexia. The project's innovative approach to transforming personal learning struggles into an aesthetic and functional visualization earned it a Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, recognizing its excellence in combining technical sophistication with meaningful personal narrative. This visualization not only serves as an educational tool but also represents a powerful artistic statement about the experience of language learning disabilities, demonstrating how data visualization can bridge the gap between personal experience and universal understanding.
