China Says Book is an innovative artistic publication that explores the rich cultural heritage of Jingdezhen, a historic city renowned for its two-thousand-year ceramic tradition. Created by designer Yang Chao in 2013, this meticulously crafted book represents a unique convergence of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design sensibilities. The large-format publication, measuring 36 centimeters by 36 centimeters, employs sophisticated production techniques including screen printing on wood for its cover and distinctive sewn binding that incorporates the word CHINA as both a textual and structural element. Through a masterful combination of graphic design, photography, illustration, and typography, the book offers a deeply personal yet scholarly perspective on Jingdezhen's cultural, environmental, and social landscape. The work demonstrates exceptional technical innovation in its production, particularly in the challenging integration of wood-based screen printing and specialized binding techniques. Realized through collaborative efforts with university workshop specialists in woodwork, metalwork, screen-printing, book-binding, and photography, the publication stands as both a functional book and an art object in its own right. The project, which was completed in Germany and exhibited there in September 2013, has garnered international recognition, including a Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to contemporary book design and cultural documentation.
