Change Vacation Hotel Dali Lodge, Travel is an award-winning architectural renovation and interior design project that transformed a traditional Bai nationality compound in Dali Ancient City, Yunnan, China, into a sophisticated contemporary hospitality establishment. The project, completed between 2015-2016, masterfully integrates modern design elements while preserving the cultural heritage of the original structure, particularly exemplifying the traditional 'three squares and a screen wall' architectural principle of Bai culture. Encompassing 850 square meters of interior space within a 1,200-square-meter plot, the design philosophy centers on creating a harmonious balance between traditional aesthetics and modern comfort, drawing inspiration from Tao Yuanming's concept of unrestrained rural living. The renovation employs a thoughtful material palette including wood finishes, antique copper, granite, grey marble, timber flooring, and rustic tiles to create an atmosphere of refined simplicity. The design team, led by Jiang Xiaolin, Wang Donglei, and Chen Magui, successfully overcame significant challenges in adapting the existing residential structure to meet contemporary hospitality standards while maintaining its historical character. The project's innovative approach to space utilization and its sophisticated integration of modern amenities earned it the prestigious Gold A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its excellence in combining cultural preservation with contemporary design principles. The hotel's design particularly excels in its attention to individual comfort, featuring meticulously planned spaces that encourage relaxation and contemplation, including spotless rooms and an unsophisticated teahouse that offers views of distant mountains, creating an environment that seamlessly blends luxury with traditional Chinese architectural elements.
