Artificial Realities Exhibition Identity

Artificial Realities Exhibition identity is a comprehensive visual communication system designed to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the East Wing Biennial, representing a sophisticated merger of architectural elements and contemporary graphic design. Created by British designer Alex Howell, this identity system masterfully integrates structural elements inspired by classical architecture with intricate geometric grids to create a visual narrative that explores the intersection of reality and artifice. The design, which garnered a Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, encompasses multiple touchpoints including an 80-page catalogue, posters in A3 and A4 formats, DL invitations, and a cleverly folded A3 to A6 handout map. The identity's distinctive visual language employs a refined color palette of royal blue and orange, chosen to convey both sophistication and contemporary appeal while complementing the exhibition's theme. The primary graphic element demonstrates particular innovation in its approach to architectural representation, transforming physical architectural features such as stone facades, archways, and window bays into abstract geometric patterns that create an intentional tension between the real and the artificial. This transformation was achieved through extensive research and site visits, resulting in a design solution that effectively addressed the challenge of limited photographic resources while maintaining visual impact. The identity system's success lies in its ability to create a strong, cohesive brand presence while remaining appropriately subdued to allow the exhibited artworks to maintain prominence, demonstrating exceptional balance in its application across both print and digital platforms.
