Kerman Museum Building Museum Building is an innovative architectural project located in Kerman, Iran, designed to harmoniously blend contemporary museum architecture with traditional regional building techniques while addressing challenging climatic conditions. The structure, elevated 8 meters above ground level, features a transformable outer shell composed of photovoltaic panels that generate the building's entire energy requirements. The design draws inspiration from the traditional 'Kapar' structures, historically used by local tribes to adapt to the region's harsh climate. The building's distinctive features include topography-based shapes for its ground floor amphitheater and restaurant, extensive roof gardens, and a sophisticated double-skin facade system that mediates between interior spaces and the extreme exterior environment. Designed by M.G.D Architectural Group and completed in 2017, the museum building exemplifies sustainable architecture through its integration of Low-E window glasses, opaque photovoltaic panels, and movable panels, all carefully calibrated using specialized software to optimize solar orientation throughout the year. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, successfully addresses the challenges of Kerman's hot, dry climate and frequent sandstorms while creating a culturally relevant, environmentally conscious public space. The building's innovative approach to climate adaptation and energy efficiency demonstrates how contemporary architectural solutions can respect and enhance local cultural heritage while meeting modern sustainability requirements.
