Chess Drama Three-dimensional Chinese Chess

Chess Drama Three-dimensional Chinese chess is an innovative reimagining of traditional Chinese chess (Xiangqi) that transforms the conventional two-dimensional game pieces into sophisticated three-dimensional sculptural forms while maintaining the game's strategic essence and cultural significance. Designed by Lingfang Shen and team at the China Academy of Art, this revolutionary interpretation addresses the declining interest in traditional Chinese chess among younger generations by introducing contemporary aesthetic elements through advanced 3D printing technology. The design features meticulously crafted pieces with distinct geometric forms, where each piece is characterized by an upper geometric block supported by four slender columns, creating a harmonious blend of traditional symbolism and modern design language. The dimensions of the pieces are carefully calibrated, ranging from the tallest king piece at 108mm to the pawns at 47mm, with each piece maintaining a consistent 30mm x 30mm base. The production process employs photopolymer resin as the primary material, utilizing 3D printing technology followed by meticulous surface finishing through polishing and spray painting, while the accompanying chessboard is crafted using acrylic laser cutting and CNC processing. The design draws inspiration from ancient Chinese architectural elements, exemplified in the pawn pieces which incorporate elements of traditional Chinese battlement architecture, symbolizing soldiers in defensive formations. This innovative approach to Chinese chess design, which won the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products Design category, successfully bridges the gap between traditional gaming culture and contemporary aesthetic preferences, making this ancient strategic game more appealing to modern audiences while preserving its rich cultural heritage.
