Chinatown Connect Community newspaper is an innovative social design initiative that addresses the critical issue of isolation among Chinese seniors in urban environments, particularly focusing on bridging the communication gap between early and recent Chinese immigrants. This dual-format publication, available in both print and digital versions, represents a thoughtful approach to community building through media design, featuring a traditional printed newspaper measuring 390mm x 540mm and a digital interface displayed on 1080 x 1920 resolution kiosks strategically placed in public spaces. The design emerged from extensive ethnographic research that revealed common interests among seemingly disparate groups of Chinese seniors, including shared experiences of grandparenting, homeland nostalgia, and appreciation for cultural traditions. The newspaper's content is carefully curated to reflect the authentic lives and experiences of Chinese seniors within their community, incorporating user-generated stories, community announcements, and interactive features that encourage social connection. The digital kiosk implementation particularly demonstrates innovative thinking in public space activation, allowing seniors to explore district-specific content and establish connections through various communication channels including WeChat, traditional letters, or text messages. This social design project, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Social Design category, exemplifies how thoughtful media design can address complex social challenges. The year-long development process included extensive research phases, careful consideration of user behaviors, and implementation of privacy protection measures, resulting in a comprehensive solution that serves both early immigration and new immigration populations while helping governmental organizations gather valuable data about isolated seniors.
