Dongziguan Affordable Housing Affordable Housing

Dongziguan Affordable Housing Affordable Housing is a groundbreaking architectural project completed in 2016 that exemplifies innovative approaches to rural housing development in China's Yangtze River region. This Gold A' Design Award-winning development encompasses a total building area of 7,170.61 square meters within a 19,277.6-square-meter site, thoughtfully designed to preserve and enhance the traditional lifestyle of relocalized farmers while providing high-quality, affordable housing solutions. The project's architectural language masterfully blends vernacular elements with contemporary design principles, featuring a distinctive interpretation of the traditional dual-slope roof transformed into continuous asymmetrical slopes. The development comprises three-floor structures reaching 11.1 meters in height, constructed using brick-reinforced concrete and finished with paint, stone, and traditional Chinese blue roofing tiles. The design philosophy prioritizes the preservation of collective living patterns through carefully planned courtyard typologies, with four basic residential units arranged to recreate the organic diversity characteristic of traditional villages. The project's technical innovations include 24-centimeter brick walls with waterproof coating and hollow glass, incorporating sophisticated thermal and ventilation solutions. With a building-to-land ratio of 37.2% and a floor area ratio of 79%, the development strikes an optimal balance between density and livability, while the strategic roof cantilevers serve both aesthetic and practical purposes, particularly during Hangzhou's rainy season. The project has successfully demonstrated how contemporary architectural solutions can address rural housing challenges while respecting cultural heritage and social dynamics, ultimately attracting additional commercial and recreational activities to the area and contributing to broader rural regeneration efforts.
