Iskilar Artists studio residence is an innovative architectural project designed by Gaurav Bhangre and Aishwarya Bhangre that seamlessly integrates an artist's studio with residential spaces, exemplifying a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. Located in Talegaon, India, this 148-square-meter structure, completed in 2016, is distinguished by its thoughtful segregation into three distinct blocks connected by versatile courtyards, effectively balancing public and private spaces. The design, which earned an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, showcases a sophisticated approach to sustainable architecture through its incorporation of vernacular elements and eco-conscious materials. The structure features remarkable architectural elements including rat trap bond brick walls, filler slabs with embedded terracotta pots serving as light fixtures, and innovative use of glass bottles arranged in constellation patterns to control natural light penetration. The project's material palette emphasizes earthen textures, complemented by Indian Patented stone flooring enhanced with terracotta bead patterns and small lamps. The gallery facade presents a monumental scale while maintaining a connection to the surrounding natural environment through carefully planned transitions and multiple levels. The design's spatial organization follows a precise 3030 grid module, with the first block housing an art gallery and rainwater harvesting system, the second block incorporating living spaces and kitchen facilities, and the third block containing bedrooms and a workspace. This architectural composition demonstrates exceptional attention to climatic responsiveness, utilizing features such as strategic louvers for ventilation and fixed glass windows for optimal natural light distribution, while inbuilt seating and furniture challenge conventional formal living space concepts.
