Daebong-dong Commercial Skip Floor Commercial Cafe

Daebong-dong Commercial Skip Floor Commercial Cafe is an innovative architectural project located in Daegu, South Korea, that exemplifies creative space utilization through its distinctive skip floor design concept. Completed in April 2015, this two-story commercial structure effectively creates four distinct spatial levels, including a rooftop deck, through its ingenious architectural composition. The building, designed by architect Junghee Lee, harmoniously integrates with its historic urban context while maintaining its unique architectural identity, particularly notable in the popular Kim Gwangseok street area. The structure employs a sophisticated combination of materials, including pine-wood exposed concrete, red cedar, and low-e glass, creating a compelling interplay of textures and surfaces. With a gross floor area of 209.87 square meters, the cafe's design deliberately fragments larger spaces into intimate zones through the strategic use of exposed concrete walls and level changes. The interior features a thoughtful contrast between floor and ceiling finishes, while a carefully positioned skylight introduces natural illumination throughout the day, enhancing the spatial experience. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional architectural innovation through its structural solution and space optimization. The design successfully achieves its objective of creating a building that maintains a modest presence while contributing distinctively to the neighborhood's character, utilizing approximately one-third of the legally permitted building size to ensure contextual sensitivity. The project's sophisticated implementation of wooden louver folding doors and its careful consideration of environmental factors further exemplify its architectural merit and functional excellence.
