Digital Chaiselongue is an innovative furniture design that represents a groundbreaking fusion of traditional craftsmanship and advanced digital fabrication technologies. This sculptural seating solution, created by Austrian designer Philipp Aduatz, exemplifies the harmonious integration of contemporary 3D concrete printing technology with refined handcrafting techniques. The design features a sophisticated freeform geometry that is achieved through an innovative concrete 3D printing process, which enables the creation of intricate, detailed structures in remarkably short production times. The chaiselongue's construction involves a two-phase process: first, a negative mold is 3D printed in concrete, followed by the printing of the complete geometry onto the mold within an hour. Strategic reinforcement with carbon fibers in critical areas ensures optimal tensile strength, while a UV-resistant polyurethane coating, applied through meticulous handcraft, provides durability and weather resistance. Measuring 220 x 75 x 85 centimeters, this functional sculpture demonstrates the potential of advanced manufacturing technologies in furniture design. The piece, which won the Silver A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products Design category, serves multiple purposes as a lounger, bench, and public artwork, suitable for both indoor and outdoor settings. Its development required sophisticated programming of a 6-axis robot and complex load-bearing calculations to determine optimal carbon fiber placement, showcasing the intersection of engineering precision and artistic vision in contemporary design.
