Lighting Beams Residence is an innovative architectural renovation project that exemplifies the harmonious integration of natural and artificial light within traditional wooden structural elements. Designed by Japanese architect Yoshitaka Uchino, this 98-square-meter residential space demonstrates a masterful approach to structural regeneration through the strategic placement of wooden beams and lighting elements. The design philosophy centers on creating order from chaos by introducing evenly spaced new beams alongside existing random beam placements, resulting in a sophisticated interplay between old and new architectural elements. Two of these beams serve as integrated lighting fixtures, achieving a seamless unity between structural and illuminative functions. The residence features a thoughtful material palette, with beams, columns, and ceilings uniformly finished in Osmo dark brown, contrasting against white walls that amplify both natural and artificial light. The project, completed in December 2018, incorporates solid oak for flooring, shelves, kitchen fixtures, and stairs, establishing a cohesive natural aesthetic throughout the space. A distinctive feature is the terrace, designed as an outdoor room enveloped by wooden walls, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. The renovation, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, showcases exceptional innovation in residential architecture through its sophisticated treatment of light, space, and structural elements.
