Annual Ring Children Space

Annual Ring Children Space is an innovative architectural and interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious integration of functional learning spaces with child-centric design principles. Created by Chinese designer Lycent Lai, this remarkable installation transforms the underground floor of a residential villa into a dynamic, double-layered environment structured around a circular motif inspired by the growth rings of trees. The design features a distinctive circular structure with a diameter of 3 meters and a total height of 4.8 meters, incorporating two levels with respective heights of 2.5 and 2.3 meters, connected by a 0.9-meter-wide staircase. The concept draws profound inspiration from the natural progression of saplings growing into mature trees, symbolizing the parallel journey of childhood development and learning. This sophisticated architectural intervention masterfully addresses the challenge of utilizing a 5-meter-high space without creating an oppressive atmosphere, instead offering an open, engaging environment that promotes intellectual and physical exploration. The project, completed in Shanghai between March 2017 and March 2018, represents a significant achievement in residential interior architecture, combining traditional Chinese philosophical elements with contemporary design solutions. The structure's unique architectural approach required specialized construction expertise, typically associated with larger-scale architectural projects, making it a pioneering example of bringing complex architectural elements into residential interiors. Recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, this project demonstrates exceptional innovation in creating child-focused learning environments that grow and evolve with their young occupants.
