Luna Sauce Dish is an innovative tableware design that reimagines the traditional sauce dish through a mindful and contemplative approach to dining experiences. Created by designers Jiani Zeng and Jillian Qua, this thoughtfully crafted vessel is distinguished by its unique ability to reveal lunar phases through the flow of liquid condiments, introducing an element of meditative awareness to the dining ritual. Crafted from premium maple wood, the dish features precisely engineered angles and contours that guide sauce in a controlled stream, creating a visual narrative that unfolds with each use. The design's sophisticated ergonomics are evident in its raised bottom that meets the base at a tangential angle, facilitating secure handling, while a subtle curve at the far end provides a dedicated rest for chopsticks. Measuring 285mm in length and 42mm in width, the dish demonstrates exceptional versatility in accommodating various sauce consistencies, from liquid soy sauce to thicker pastes and spices. The creation process involved extensive research utilizing clay, foam, and wooden prototypes to perfect the liquid flow dynamics and surface interactions. This innovative approach to tableware design earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design category, acknowledging its contribution to mindful dining practices and innovative functional aesthetics. The design successfully merges practical utility with contemplative experience, encouraging users to pause and appreciate the moment before their meal, while its minimalist aesthetic emphasizes the essential elements of flow and visual transformation.
