Beautiful Pencil Sharpener is an innovative stationery design that transforms the mundane act of pencil sharpening into an aesthetic experience by incorporating a unique flower-shaped waste collection system. Created by designers Di Lu and Junfeng Wang, this artistic interpretation of a functional object exemplifies the intersection of utility and beauty in everyday items. The design, which garnered a Silver A' Design Award in the Art and Stationery Supplies Design category, features a distinctive mechanism where pencil shavings emerge as decorative, petal-like formations, creating an evolving floral display during use. The device, measuring 65x28x85 millimeters, employs thoughtful product semantics in its construction, with carefully designed exit paths that guide the shavings into a visually pleasing arrangement. Manufactured using either 3D printing with photosensitive resin for small batches or PP/ABS plastic for mass production, the sharpener addresses modern users' need for emotional connection with everyday objects. The design's most notable feature is its ability to transform discarded pencil shavings into ring-like curly petals that radiate from the center in various colors, creating a gradual, romantic visual effect. This innovative approach to waste management in a common office tool demonstrates how functional design can incorporate elements of surprise and delight, making routine tasks more engaging and aesthetically pleasing. The project, completed in Xiamen in 2018, represents a response to contemporary society's efficiency-focused lifestyle by introducing moments of artistic appreciation into daily activities.
