Dongshang Japanese Restaurant

Dongshang Japanese Restaurant is an award-winning contemporary Japanese dining establishment located in Beijing's central business district, exemplifying a harmonious fusion of Japanese and Chinese cultural elements through innovative architectural design. The 240-square-meter space, designed by Japanese architect Yuichiro Imafuku, is distinguished by its extensive use of bamboo, a material deeply rooted in both Japanese and Chinese artistic traditions, employed in various forms and dimensions throughout the interior. The restaurant's design philosophy centers on creating an immersive dining experience that evokes the sensation of being within a bamboo grove, achieved through carefully crafted architectural elements including bamboo strip-covered walls secured with brass nails and a suspended transparent canopy of bamboo sticks that creates intimate dining spaces. The sophisticated interior combines natural materials with refined modern elements, featuring brass accents, terrazzo flooring, granite stone, and steel details, while the bar area showcases light grey artificial marble with brass strips and an elegantly designed backbar with vertical bamboo louvers displaying illuminated bottles. The entrance sequence is thoughtfully orchestrated, featuring an intermediate space that serves as a transition between the public corridor and the intimate dining area, where carefully positioned lighting filters through bamboo ceiling elements to create dappled light effects reminiscent of natural sunlight through foliage. Recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, this 52-seat establishment represents a significant achievement in sustainable design practices while paying homage to the 8,000-year history of bamboo cultivation in East Asian culture.
