Chris Bangle

Chris Bangle is an American automobile designer known for his innovative and often controversial designs. Born on October 14, 1956, in Ravenna, Ohio, Bangle's passion for design was evident from a young age. He pursued his education at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, where he honed his skills in industrial design. Bangle's career took off when he joined Fiat in 1981, where he worked on the interior design of the Fiat Coupe. His talent and unique perspective caught the attention of the automotive industry, and he soon found himself at the helm of BMW's design team in 1992. As Chief of Design, Bangle oversaw the creation of some of the most iconic and polarizing designs in the company's history, including the E65 7 Series, E63 6 Series, and E60 5 Series. His bold, unconventional approach to design challenged traditional notions of luxury car aesthetics and sparked heated debates among automotive enthusiasts. Bangle's designs were characterized by their striking lines, sculpted surfaces, and departure from the conservative styling that had previously defined the brand. While his work at BMW garnered mixed reactions, it undeniably left an indelible mark on the automotive design landscape. Bangle's influence extended beyond his tenure at BMW, as his design philosophy and willingness to push boundaries inspired a new generation of designers. After leaving BMW in 2009, Bangle continued to explore his creative vision through his own design consultancy, Chris Bangle Associates, where he has worked on projects ranging from furniture to electric vehicles. His contributions to the field of automotive design have earned him numerous accolades, including the EyesOn Design Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
