Antide Janvier (1751-1835) was a French horologist, mechanic, and watchmaker renowned for his exceptional contributions to the art of horology during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Saint-Claude, Jura, France, Janvier demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for mechanics and astronomy from a young age. He began his career as an apprentice to his father, Claude-Étienne Janvier, who was a watchmaker and clockmaker. Janvier quickly surpassed his father's skills and gained recognition for his innovative designs and intricate mechanisms. He is best known for his creation of astronomical clocks, which incorporated complex displays of celestial movements, including the phases of the moon, the positions of the planets, and the apparent motion of the sun. Janvier's masterpieces showcased his deep understanding of astronomy and his ability to translate celestial phenomena into precise mechanical representations.
