Chroma-key is a post-production technique used in video and photography to replace a solid background color, typically green or blue, with a different image or video. This process allows the superimposition of a subject onto a virtual background, creating the illusion that the subject is in a different environment. The technique relies on the principle of color separation, where the specific hue of the background is isolated and made transparent, allowing the new background to be composited seamlessly behind the subject. The choice of green or blue as the background color is due to their distinct difference from human skin tones, making it easier to isolate without affecting the subject. Chroma-keying has a rich history in the film and television industry, with early implementations dating back to the 1930s. However, it was the advent of digital technology that revolutionized the process, making it more accessible and efficient. Today, chroma-key is an essential tool in various fields, including news broadcasting, weather reporting, and special effects in movies and television shows. It has also found applications in the gaming industry, enabling live streaming of gameplay with the player superimposed on the game footage.
