Ali Rafie

Ali Rafie is one of the most famous Iranian artists of the twentieth century. He was born in Tehran in 1914, and showed an early aptitude for art from a young age. He studied painting and drawing at the University of Tehran and quickly developed his own signature style, which combined elements of modernism and traditional Persian art. He was heavily influenced by the masters of European modernism; he was particularly inspired by the works of Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. He is most known for his oil paintings and calligraphic works, which reflect his distinct synthesis of Eastern and Western art, as well as his exploration of the possibilities of abstract painting. His major accomplishments can be seen in many of the leading galleries and museums of Tehran, including the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, where his works are among the most celebrated.
