John Paul Jones was not only an accomplished artist and designer, but also a naval hero who played a pivotal role in the American Revolution. Born John Paul in Scotland in 1747, he went to sea at the age of 13 and quickly rose through the ranks to become a captain. He changed his name to John Paul Jones after killing a sailor in a duel and fled to America to escape prosecution. In 1775, he joined the Continental Navy and was given command of the ship Providence. He went on to capture several British vessels and became known for his daring raids on British ports. Jones is perhaps best known for his victory over the British ship Serapis in 1779. During the battle, his ship, the Bonhomme Richard, was badly damaged and was on the verge of sinking. Jones famously declared, I have not yet begun to fight! and continued the battle. After a fierce struggle, the Serapis surrendered, and Jones emerged victorious. This battle cemented his reputation as a naval hero and made him a household name in America. After the war, Jones served as a naval officer in Russia and France, but he struggled to find a permanent position in the American navy. He died in Paris in 1792, but his legacy lived on. He was revered as a hero in America and was honored with a monument in Washington, D.C. in 1912.
