Enamelled Jewellery

Enamelled jewellery refers to a type of jewellery that is decorated with enamel, a vitreous substance that is fused onto a metal surface by firing. Enamel is a type of glass that is made by melting powdered glass onto a metal base. Enamelled jewellery can be made from a variety of metals, including gold, silver, copper, and bronze. The enamel can be applied in a variety of ways, including cloisonné, champlevé, plique-à-jour, and painted enamel. Cloisonné enamelling involves creating compartments, or cloisons, on the metal surface and filling them with enamel. Champlevé enamelling involves carving out areas on the metal surface and filling them with enamel. Plique-à-jour enamelling involves creating a lattice-like structure on the metal surface and filling it with enamel. Painted enamel involves painting the enamel directly onto the metal surface. Enamelled jewellery has a long history, dating back to ancient times. It was particularly popular during the Byzantine and Medieval periods, and was used to decorate religious objects such as crosses and reliquaries. In the Renaissance period, enamelled jewellery became popular among the wealthy, and was used to decorate items such as snuffboxes and watches. Today, enamelled jewellery is still popular, and is often used to create colourful and intricate designs. It is particularly popular in India, where it is used to create traditional jewellery such as Kundan and Meenakari.
