Wieki Somers

Wieki Somers is a highly acclaimed Dutch artist and designer who has been creating innovative and thought-provoking works since the late 1980s. Her works are characterized by their multidisciplinary nature, as she experiments with a wide range of materials and techniques to create pieces that challenge our perceptions of art and design. One of the key aspects of Wieki Somers' work is her focus on the relationship between humans and objects. She is interested in exploring how we interact with the things around us, and how these interactions shape our experiences and perceptions of the world. This is evident in many of her works, such as Frozen in Time (2010), a series of glass objects that capture and preserve moments in time, and Mitate (2017), a collection of furniture pieces that blur the boundaries between function and sculpture. Another important aspect of Wieki Somers' work is her use of traditional craft techniques and materials. She often collaborates with artisans and craftspeople to create pieces that combine contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship. This is evident in works such as Out of the Ordinary (2017), a collection of objects made from woven straw and leather, and Merry-Go-Round Coat Rack (2004), a coat rack made from hand-carved wood and brass. Overall, Wieki Somers is a visionary artist and designer whose works challenge our perceptions of art and design, and explore the complex relationships between humans and objects. Her multidisciplinary approach, focus on traditional craftsmanship, and interest in the intersection of function and sculpture make her a truly unique and innovative creator.
