Willem De Rooij is a prominent Dutch artist known for his photographic, film and multimedia installations. Born in 1959 in Tilburg, Netherlands, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem and at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague before becoming a professor at the Hamburg Academy of Art in 2011. An influential figure in modern art, De Rooij's works explore themes of materiality, the political and social history of materials, and the relationship between the individual and collective memory. His notable works include The Fast Set (1993–94), which portrays a complex network of relationships between characters in a narrative sequence, and The Belly of an Architect (1996), which examines the contemporary cultural and political complexities of post-Soviet Russia. Other works include Eternal Return (2003–06), a four-part installation exploring the history of cultural production in the former Eastern bloc; and Flamboya (2011), a film installation examining the legacy of colonialism in the West.
