Maya Deren

Maya Deren (1917–1961) was an American avant-garde filmmaker, choreographer, and film theorist. Regarded as one of the most important figures in American experimental film, her pioneering work in the 1940s and 1950s helped to develop the American avant-garde film movement. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, she emigrated to the United States with her family in 1922. After studying dance, she began to make films, creating works that utilized non-linear narrative, surrealist imagery, and themes of discovery and self-exploration. Deren is best known for her films Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) and At Land (1944). Meshes has been described as one of the most influential films of the 1940s, and is considered one of the first films to explore the inner world of dream states and psychological states of the mind. At Land is a 15-minute experimental film that experiments with the concept of identity, blending elements of surrealism and symbolic imagery with Deren's style of dancing and physical performance.
