Jonas Mekas was a Lithuanian-born American artist and filmmaker who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of avant-garde cinema. Mekas was a pioneer of diaristic film, a style of filmmaking that involves the use of personal, often autobiographical footage, and he is credited with helping to establish the New American Cinema movement in the 1960s. Jonas Mekas is a Lithuanian artist who is considered a pioneer of diaristic film. He was born in Semeniškiai, Lithuania in 1922 and moved to the United States in 1949. There, he has dedicated himself to the artistic exploration of modern life through a style of filmmaking that involves the use of diary film. His works have influenced the development of visual video and poetry. Mekas has been a seminal contributor to New American Cinema and held a central position in moving image cultures of the 20th century. His works range from experimental shorts and feature-length film poems to the diaristic film series,The Walden Diaries. Some of his most renowned works include, “As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty”, “Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania” and “Lost, Lost, Lost”.
