Cytometers

Cytometers are analytical instruments used to measure the physical and chemical characteristics of cells and particles in a sample. They are widely used in research and clinical laboratories for a variety of applications, including cell counting, cell sorting, and biomarker analysis. Cytometers use a combination of lasers, optics, and electronics to detect and analyze the properties of cells and particles as they pass through a sensing area. The basic principle of cytometry is based on the detection of scattered light and fluorescence emitted by cells and particles. As a sample is introduced into the cytometer, it is focused into a narrow stream and passed through a laser beam. The laser beam interacts with the cells and particles, causing them to scatter light and emit fluorescence. The scattered light and fluorescence are then detected by photomultiplier tubes and other detectors, and the resulting signals are processed and analyzed by computer software. Cytometers are available in a variety of configurations, ranging from simple flow cytometers to high-end imaging cytometers. Flow cytometers are the most commonly used type of cytometer, and they are capable of analyzing thousands of cells per second. Imaging cytometers, on the other hand, are capable of capturing high-resolution images of cells and particles, allowing for more detailed analysis of cellular morphology and function. Overall, cytometers are powerful tools for analyzing the properties of cells and particles in a sample. They have revolutionized the field of cell biology and have led to numerous discoveries in the areas of immunology, cancer research, and drug development.
