Don Hunstein was not an artist, but rather a renowned American photographer who made significant contributions to the world of music photography. Born in 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri, Hunstein began his career as a staff photographer for Columbia Records in 1955. During his tenure at Columbia, Hunstein captured some of the most iconic images in music history, including the cover of Bob Dylan's Freewheelin' album, which features Dylan and his then-girlfriend walking down a New York City street. Hunstein also photographed Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash, and many other legendary musicians. Hunstein's photography was characterized by his ability to capture candid moments that revealed the personalities of his subjects. He was known for his use of natural light and his ability to create a relaxed atmosphere that put his subjects at ease. His photographs were often used for album covers and promotional materials, and they helped to shape the public image of many musicians. In addition to his work at Columbia Records, Hunstein also worked as a freelance photographer, capturing images of musicians in a variety of settings. He continued to work as a photographer until his death in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of iconic images that continue to inspire and influence music photography today.
