Fussli

Johann Heinrich Füssli (1741-1825) was a Swiss artist who made a significant contribution to the Romantic movement in art. His paintings are characterized by their dramatic and often eerie qualities, which are achieved through the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, and the incorporation of fantastical elements. Füssli was also a prolific writer, and his essays on art and literature were influential in shaping the Romantic aesthetic. He was particularly interested in the role of the imagination in artistic creation, and believed that art should be a means of expressing the innermost thoughts and emotions of the artist. Füssli's legacy continues to be felt in the art world today, as his work continues to inspire new generations of artists.

Johann Heinrich Füssli (1741-1825) was a Swiss artist renowned for his romantic and dramatic paintings. His artwork is characterized by contemplative figures placed in eerie, dreamlike settings and his paintings range from pastoral landscapes to apocalyptic and nightmarish depictions of history and mythology. Some of his most famous works include The Nightmare (1781), The Witch (1812), and The Shipwreck (1804). Füssli's style evolved from the rococo to a movement closer to the German romanticism of Caspar David Friedrich and even J.M.W. Turner in the later stages of his career. He was also a prolific etcher and illustrator and his illustrations for Mary Shelley’s novel “Frankenstein” (1817) remain among his best-known works.
