Jan Troell is a Swedish filmmaker, cinematographer, and producer widely renowned for his works on the history of Swedish society and culture, starting from the 1960s. His film, I skuggan av ett brott, won the Guldbagge Award for Best Film in 1962. Other notable works by Troell include Hästen från gläntan (1968), Utvandrarna (1971) and Invandrarfilmen (1978). He also wrote and directed the English-language films The Emigrants (1971) and The New Land (1972). His films explore the lives of the working-class, the struggles of immigrants, and the complexities of Swedish class struggle. Troell has received numerous awards, including the Ingmar Bergman Award in 1977, the European Film Award in 1990, and the Life Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association in 2007.
