Greyhound

Greyhound is an Old English word derived from the Proto-Germanic gris hundaz and ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ghreis- (‘grey’) and *kwon- (‘dog’). Linguistically, the word has remained relatively constant throughout history, with variations such as greyhund, grighund, greyhounde, and greyhounde dogge being recorded in the Middle Ages. While morphology has remained consistent throughout the centuries, the pragmatics of the term have changed drastically. In Old English, the term was used generally to refer to a breed of sighthounds and later to describe a specific breed of short-haired greyhound with slim, athletic qualities. By the late 19th century, Greyhound became synonymous with transportation by bus, a result of the Greyhound Bus Lines starting up in 1914.
