Siamese is an architectural style that originated in the region now known as Thailand and dates back to the thirteenth century. Siamese architecture is characterized by its intricate, ornamented and decorative motifs and its use of stucco and terracotta, as well as its use of natural materials such as wood, stone, and clay. In Siamese architecture, roofs are often steep with multiple tiers, and the walls are adorned with ornate carvings and decorations. Siamese architecture also features a number of religious structures, such as temples, shrines and pagodas, which are often surrounded by elaborate gardens and courtyards. The word ‘Siamese’ is used to refer to things from or related to the Southeast Asian country now known as Thailand, which was formerly known as Siam. Originally, the term ‘Siamese’ was used to refer specifically to the Siamese cats which were imported from Siam (Thailand) to the United Kingdom in the 19th century. From there, the term was picked up and expanded to refer to all of the people, culture, language, and political structure associated with Siam. Starting as a foreign term in its original form, ‘Siamese’ underwent a process of linguistic evolution and historical refinement, as well as morphological and grammatical alterations, until it became a distinctly Thai word to refer to the Thai people and their culture. Within the context of its use, ‘Siamese’ generally has a connotation of exoticism and foreignness, which has been underscored by its employment in popular culture since the late 19th century.
