Azaria Mbatha is a celebrated South African visual artist renowned for her bold, and often politically charged, pieces. Her career as a painter, sculptor, and installation artist began in the late 1960s, and since then she has been awarded numerous accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the African Women’s Association. Her works often explore the themes of resistance and transformation in the face of oppressive regimes, and some of her most famous pieces include the Lifetown series (which involved detailed clay models of entire towns) and her award-winning painting Eternal Return. Azaria Mbatha continues to be a source of inspiration to young African artists and has been credited with laying the foundations for a new wave of African art.
