Ricardo Basbaum is one of Brazil’s foremost contemporary artists. Through his installations, performances, writing, and art projects, Basbaum has developed a creative practice in which he questions the relationships between economic and political systems, technology, and language. Working in a wide variety of media, Basbaum combines and juxtaposes various elements to create works that explore issues of identity, communication, and civic participation. Among his best-known works are the DaDa daí project, a series of translations of the works of the German avant-garde movement, and the Playpen project, which involved creating interactive playgrounds in several cities around the world. Basbaum's most recent works include the Voice Over and Mundos Possíveis sound installation projects, as well as the Transcultura curatorial project. Ricardo Basbaum has exhibited his work internationally, including at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and 2011, the São Paulo Biennale in 2006, the Istanbul Biennale in 2007, and Documenta in 2012.
