Alex Colville, who is currently regarded as one of the most celebrated contemporary Canadian artists, was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1920 and studied fine arts at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. He was an early leader in the field of magical realism, a movement which combines elements of realism and fantasy. Notable works by Colville include To Prince Edward Island (1963), which is housed in the National Gallery of Canada, Horse and Train (1963) and the series of prints entitled Hometown (1963-64). Colville was awarded the Order of Canada in 1982 and the Order of Nova Scotia in 2001 and continues to have a great influence on both Canadian and international art.
