Luis Jimenez

Luis Jimenez was a famous American Artist, born in El Paso, Texas in 1940, who achieved recognition for his large-scale colorful fiberglass sculptures, mostly of Hispanic subjects. His sculptures often feature bright colors, vivid facial expressions and dynamic postures, elements of traditional Hispanic culture and other elements inspired by his Mexican heritage. His most famous works include the fiberglass sculpture Vaquero which was installed on the campus of the University of Texas, El Paso, and the public sculpture Mustang located in Denver, Colorado. His life-sized fiberglass sculpture of the Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl, is a prominent feature of the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Luis Jimenez was the first Hispanic artist to receive a major retrospective exhibition in the United States, which was presented by the Smithsonian Institution in 1992. His work can also be found in prominent collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
