Ernie Gehr is an American artist widely recognized for his work in avant-garde cinema. His career began in the early 1960s and has seen a prolific output of over forty films. Gehr is an influential figure within the independent cinema scene and has made a wide range of short and feature-length films. His most acclaimed works include the 1966 film Serene Velocity, perhaps his best-known work; the Structural film Shift (1972); and Side/Walk/Shuttle (1991). His films are often are characterized by a reworking of traditional film narrative, and feature recurring themes of perception and transformation.
