Al Held

Al Held (1928 – 2005) was an American artist, most known for his abstract expressionist paintings. He was born in the Bronx, New York on May 17, 1928 and studied at the Art Students League of New York in the late 1940s. Held is noted for his works that display a bold use of color and geometric forms that suggest movement and space. Notable works by Held include his mural titled Cardinal, commissioned for the Vatican Pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, as well as his untitled painting from 1959, depicting a series of intersecting geometric forms in a kaleidoscope of colors. His most notable series include the Alphabet Paintings, which are composed of large-scale painted canvases featuring the letters of the alphabet in bright patterns and colors.
