Zhang Yuan is a Chinese artist who is internationally recognized for his involvement with the New Wave cinema movement in the 1980s and 1990s. His works are known for their visual wit and playfulness as well as a subtle commentary on the social and political climate of the times. Zhang Yuan's most iconic works include East Palace, West Palace, Seventeen Years, Little Red Flowers, and Crazy Stone. Within the cinema movement, his films have achieved critical acclaim and are often cited as catalysts of the revolutionary changes to Chinese cinema in the 1990s.
