Alessandro Raho

Alessandro Raho is a contemporary British painter whose work is characterized by its poetic figuration and exploration of the relationship between painting, photography, and film. Born in 1971 in Italy, Raho moved to London in the 1980s, where he studied at Goldsmiths College and emerged as part of the Young British Artists generation. His work is known for its distinctive use of light and color, which imbues his figures with a sense of luminosity and depth. Raho's paintings often depict solitary figures in contemplative poses, rendered with a striking realism that belies their emotional intensity. His work has been exhibited in major institutions around the world, including the Whitechapel Gallery in London, the Contemporary Art Museum in Houston, and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. In addition to his painting practice, Raho has also worked extensively in photography and film. His photographic series We Lost Each Other in Open Space explores the boundaries between painting and photography, using the medium to create painterly images that blur the lines between abstraction and representation. His film The Passenger is an abstract meditation on the nature of perception and the passage of time, while his immersive installation The Thread invites viewers to explore the interplay between light, color, and space. Raho's work is characterized by its sensitivity to the human form and its ability to convey complex emotions through subtle gestures and expressions. His paintings are often described as haunting and enigmatic, inviting viewers to contemplate the mysteries of the human psyche. Through his exploration of the relationship between painting, photography, and film, Raho has created a body of work that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
