Arnold Gross was a Hungarian abstract painter who was born in Budapest in 1889. He began his art education at the Hungarian Royal Academy of Art where he was trained in the traditional academic style. In 1919, he joined the group of Bauhaus-trained modernists in Hungary. Throughout his career, Gross was dedicated to exploring the limits of abstraction. His thoughtful compositions contain references to landscape and call into question the boundaries between abstraction and figuration. His work was highly influential within Hungary and across Central Europe. Gross' major works include ‘The Red Boat’, ‘Hiding’, ‘The Lovers’, and ‘In the Park’.
